Airbus welcomes the announcement of the EU research budget

Blagnac09 July 2012

Airbus welcomes the announcement of the EU research budget and would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the European Commission on its most recent set of calls, announced as part of the 7th EU Research and Technological Framework Programme (FP7).

The 8.1 billion euros that the EU Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, Marie Geoghegan-Quinn, has committed to make available is a great boost to European innovation and competitiveness. The call will further leverage public and private investment in research, increase employment in the short to medium term and consequently generate additional growth for the EU economy.

Speaking of the Commission announcement, Axel Krein – Head of Research and Technology at Airbus – commented, “Airbus is a proud partner of the European Commission’s current Framework Programme. We believe that the leveraging approach of FP7, which matches public and private resources, is an essential tool in stimulating European competitiveness and ensuring the region’s technological leadership for years to come. A 100 million euro investment in R&T in the aeronautics sector is estimated by governments and institutions alike to raise GDP by 700 million euros over 10 years, driving as it does real innovation. Aeronautic R&T also has significant positive spin-offs that spur technological breakthroughs in many other industrial sectors.

The Commission has set aside over 400 million euros of this total funding for aeronautics projects (including Clean Sky and ATM projects), which will allow for the development of cutting-edge technology and increasingly eco-efficient aircraft. We are looking forward to continuing this positive trend under Horizon 2020 as the next Framework Programme.”

Airbus invests heavily in research and innovation activities and has recently been named the ‘Best European Investor in Europe’ at the 10th annual World Investment Conference in La Baule, France. Of the 2 billion euros that Airbus invests annually in R&D&T activities, over 90% of our research investment is made in areas relating to the environment and sustainability of aviation, including reducing noise and fuel emissions.

FP7 is the European Commission’s 7th Research and Technological Framework Programme for the period 2007-2013. The next EU instrument that will support European research, innovation and science – known as Horizon 2020 - has a proposed total budget of 80 billion euro for the period 2014 – 2020.
